School of Motion - Animation Bootcamp
About
School of Motion is a world-class animation and motion design online school, they provide intense six-week training for professionals wanting to increase their skills and learn the most efficient and effective way to animate.  Specifically, the Animation Bootcamp course takes students through the fundamentals of animation, such as squash & stretch, anticipation, reinforced movement and controlling the viewer's eye. These skills allow them to tell a story and create beautiful, purposeful movement.
Process
Twice a week we were tasked to animate pre-designed boards, while utilising a specific animation skill, such as follow through, eye trace and oscillation.  Creativity was encouraged, but while staying as close to the style frames as possible.
One of the final assessments involved using all the fundamentals of animation, and the recent skill eye trace learnt.
I approached this task from a different perspective, by thinking holistically about concepts to take the eye to around the screen and between storyboards.  Through iterating on paper, I was able to see the movement for its purpose and without getting bogged down in the details. Once I decided the overall movement,  I could begin smoothly animating between frames using the fundamentals learnt previously. As the main problem solving was done in the conception stage, I was able to move through this project with less friction.  The final result worked well, with positive comments from my Teaching Assistant, and subtle changes to the movement's accuracy, making it more visually appealing. I found the concept of eye trace to be logical; however, the execution was challenging.  I learnt a lot from changing my process and thinking about the problem differently. Overall this course challenged me beyond what I thought my limit was, while I learnt valuable skills in animation and workflow processes from professional animators.
